Excessive Electro Magnetic Fields
Excessive Electro Magnetic Fields (EMF) is known to cause equipment performance problems to the point of total breakdown. It is also known that EMF can cause bodily harm to humans hence norms have been defined to limit these environmental conditions.
The norms for Low Frequency EMF is described in the IEC-61000-4-8 standard which describes the maximum levels of radiation which is acceptable to equipment.
For human safety, industry best practices from bodies such as NCRM indicate the levels for continuous exposure deemed still to be safe for human bodies. Recently more stringent guidelines have been announced in the UK by AGNIR and HPA indicating a much lower level acceptable to human bodies.
EMF is present everywhere around us as it is generated from various sources such as electronic equipment, TV sets/Computer monitors (CRT) and power cables. Since power consumption is on the rise, so is the EMF pollution.
Most (office) buildings have high current carrying cables which often run in hidden areas such as floor and false ceiling voids. In other cases they run in ducts. The issue is that they are hidden from the users view but they are dangerously close when it comes to EMF…
In some cases the radiation is at such a high level that it is showing immediate visible signs such as flickering monitors, computer/network equipment with slow performance or random crashes and/or more then normal failure rates. In some cases it manifests itself with people getting headache, nausea etc.
In other cases where the radiation is at lower, but still dangerous, levels immediate problems are not detected but long term health problems might develop.
The EMF audit is designed to survey areas for Electro Magnetic Fields. This is done with state of the art equipment which is able to measure EMF at any location in a 3-dimensional spectrum via which composite calculations are performed. These results are then compared to international standards, norms and best practices. A report will be generated with the findings, conclusions and recommendations. If desired the report can also include proposal for adequate shielding technologies and its costing.
