What is DCE 9000



DCE 9000 (Data Center Excellence 9000) is a new quality management system (QMS) standard aimed at establishing quality standards for the manufacturers and suppliers delivering critical infrastructure to data centers. It is being developed by the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA). 

 

Why was DCE 9000 created?

The data center industry is expanding at an extraordinary pace due to AI, cloud computing, and digital transformation. While standards such as ANSI/TIA-942 define how a data center should be designed and built, there has been no dedicated quality standard governing how suppliers manufacture, test, deliver, and manage critical infrastructure equipment.

 

DCE 9000 aims to address:

  1. Fragmented and duplicated quality requirements imposed on suppliers by different customers and operators
  2. Supply chain quality and reliability risks
  3. Lack of a recognised certification that suppliers can use to demonstrate quality credentials to the market
  4. Lack of a standardised baseline for evaluating and onboarding new supplier
  5. Increasing scrutiny on supply chain resilience

 

What does it cover?

The initial scope focuses on critical physical infrastructure systems, including:

  • Power generation systems
  • Cooling systems
  • Switchgear and electrical distribution
  • UPS systems
  • Batteries and energy storage
  • Racks and containment
  • Monitoring and control systems
  • Physical security systems

It addresses the entire lifecycle, including design, manufacturing, installation, testing, commissioning, and supplier quality management.

Is it based on ISO 9001?

Yes. DCE 9000 is built on the ISO 9001 quality management framework but adds data center-specific requirements and metrics. It also draws lessons from mature industry standards such as TL 9000 (telecommunications), AS9100 (aerospace), IATF 16949 (automotive).

 

Current status

The working group includes companies such as EPI, Google, Oracle, Iron Mountain, ABB, Eaton, Johnson Controls, Schneider Electric, and others. Draft development is underway in 2026, with publication and certification planned for 2027.

 

In a nutshell

TIA-942 helps ensure the data center is designed and built correctly. DCOS helps ensure the data center is operated correctly at the defined maturity level. DCE 9000 helps ensure the suppliers delivering the infrastructure have robust quality processes in place.  

Together, the three standards address the facility, the operations, and the supply chain that supports the data centre.
