The emergence of modular data centers marks a significant shift in how we conceptualize and deploy data center infrastructures. These consolidated solutions encompass a wide array of components in a compact, unified framework, delivering unparalleled efficiency, scalability, and agility.
Until now, there was no standard describing the technical requirements for modular data center solutions. In some cases, other standards such as ANSI/TIA-942, EN 50600, and ISO 22237 have been applied. However, these standards are developed for conventional data center building infrastructures and therefore do not address the specific requirements for modular containment-based data center solutions.
This EPI MDCS® - Modular Data Center Standard has been prepared by a global committee spanning various industries and countries under the leadership of EPI®.
For the purpose of this standard, a Modular Data Center (MDC) is defined as a structure comprising two opposing cabinets equipped with supporting equipment, such as power and cooling subsystems, and contained within.
Examples of MDC Solutions
This standard applies to the complete range of all-in-one modular data centers. Whether deployed in industrial, commercial, or residential settings, the guidelines outlined here aim for universal applicability, ensuring a robust and standardized approach to implementing integrated modular data center solutions. Adhering to these technical requirements enables stakeholders across industries to enjoy enhanced reliability, simplified maintenance, and seamless integration of these advanced data infrastructure solutions.
The MDCS® describes the design requirements for the following elements of an MDC solution:
Optionally the MDC can contain the following:
The MDCS® aims to establish a cohesive set of technical requirements, promoting uniformity and compatibility in the implementation and management of modular data centers. It encompasses essential elements, including the environmental considerations, structural, electrical, mechanical, cabling, security, fire safety, integrated wiring, and monitoring and control subsystems.
It's crucial that all parties engaged in designing, manufacturing, deploying, and operating integrated modular data centers strictly adhere to the specifications outlined in this standard. This collective dedication to a unified framework not only establishes a common industry language but also expedites innovation and the widespread adoption of modular data center solutions.
Manufacturers of MDC solutions can undergo audits against the requirements of this standard to gauge their current level of compliance. The conformity report will specify the Rating or Rating levels achieved by the MDC.
The audit's findings based on the MDCS® will offer MDC solution manufacturers a clear indication of compliance. This fosters trust among solution users, ensuring that the solution meets all the stringent requirements of this standard.
EPI and its authorized audit organizations are able to provide an official MDCS® audit and certification for MDC solutions. Please contact sales@epi-certification.com for more information.
